The Origins

The Hive2Hive library project originally arose from a course challenge task project at the Communication Systems Group at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, in 2013. Referred by the name Box2Box, a small and highly motivated team of graduate students implemented a fully decentralized file synchronization and sharing software, which resembled the feature set of cloud offerings, such as Dropbox or Google Drive, while maintaining security and privacy. The Box2Box project was the winner of the challenge task and thus has been backed by SmartenIT, as well as FLAMINGO expertise, when it was successfully demonstrated at the IEEE 13th International Conference on P2P Computing in Trento, Italy. The respective paper describing Box2Box in more detail can be found in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library or directly in the UZH CSG Publications.

The Box2Box project sparked great interest and stirred constructive discussions in the P2P community. Therefore, the highly motivated team continued their work on this approach and thus came up with the Hive2Hive library project, a more sophisticated, generalized and extendable approach.
