###Introduction to Project Management with Trello ####Friday, January 16 Jodie Gambill and Cliff Anderson

  • Do you think managing projects requires complicated spreadsheets and charts? If so, then you need to learn about Trello, a simple web-based tool for organizing projects. In this workshop, we'll introduce you to some basic ideas of agile project management and teach you how to implement those ideas using Trello. You'll come away with a simple system for keeping you and your colleagues on track and working productively together.

  • Learn the basics of podcasting with this hands on workshop. We will provide step by step instruction using open source software to record, edit, and publish audio podcasts. We will discuss different equipment options and provide a list of useful resources for future reference.

###Introduction to Makerspaces ####Friday, January 30 Sara Sterkenburg and Chris Strasbaugh

  • Makerspaces are community labs that bring people together to create, invent, and learn. But what exactly goes on in them? Is it true that makers can pick locks or make pianos out of bananas? What on earth do they have to do with libraries? Come find out! In this workshop we’ll talk all about the maker movement and introduce you to technologies such as Arduino, 3D printers, and more. We’ll even build our own art bots!

###Managing Your Online Scholarly Presence ####Friday, February 6 Ed Warga

  • Social media has been making an impact on all our lives including how we work and maintain a professional network. This workshop offers some ideas for managing your online presence with researcher profiles, researcher IDs, and article level altmetrics. We will discuss options for researcher profiles like Google Scholar, Academia.edu, Researchgate, and Vivo; get started with researcher IDs to help link online content to an individual researcher; and explore how altmetrics allow you to identify important work by tracking citations and mentions of work in blogs, twitter, and other social networks.

###Bringing Historical Maps into the Digital Age ####Friday, February 13 Lindsey Fox

  • ArcGIS, Mapbox, and Tilemill are three GIS technologies that can help you make and serve out a beautiful map (historic or otherwise). In this workshop we will cover the basics of georeferencing a map of your choosing, bring it into Tilemill for styling, and upload it to Mapbox. By the end of this short class, you will be able to georeference and serve out a map on your own!

###Introduction to Modding Minecraft Maps ####Friday, February 20 Lindsey Fox and Cliff Anderson

  • Minecraft is among the most popular video games ever. Minecraft is deceptively simple to play, but offers an enormously malleable game environment. In this session, we'll show you how to write Minecraft mods (or modifications) using the open source toolkit CanaryMod. Beyond teaching you how to write simple mods to alter the Minecraft game environment, we'll talk about potential uses for Minecraft as an educational technology.

###Learning Pandoc: A Universal Document Converter ####Friday, February 27 Ramona Romero

  • Pandoc, created by John MacFarlane, is an open-source document converter. Pandoc easily converts documents in Markdown, HTML, Microsoft Word docx and others into HTML, word processor formats, eBooks, and more. In this workshop we’ll learn how to install this command line tool and practice converting documents in a variety of formats including Markdown, HTML and Microsoft Word docx.

###Introduction to Open Source Statistical Analysis with R ####Friday, March 13 Cliff Anderson

  • R is an open source programming language for statistical analysis. In this session, we'll show you how to get started with R. Learn how to load data into R and to plot simple graphs. We'll also introduce you to RStudio, a free integrated development environment (IDE) for R. You won't leave as an R expert, but you'll learn enough to get started on your data analysis journey.

###Introduction to Data Cleaning and Preservation ####Friday, March 20 Morgan Daniels

  • Cleaning and preserving a dataset makes it more available for long-term use and sharing with interested colleagues (and can help you meet funding agency requirements for data management!) In this session, we'll explore the tool OpenRefine and use it to work with a sample dataset. We'll also talk about simple ways to preserve your research data.

###How to Build a Free Website using GitHub Pages ####Friday, March 27 Cliff Anderson

  • Did you know it's possible to host a website freely using your GitHub repository? We'll show you how to use GitHub Pages to create a static HTML website with all the benefits of version control. We'll also take a look at Jekyll, a tool for generating websites from Markdown. By the end, you'll be ready to roll your own website for coursework or scholarly projects.

###Degrees of Kevin Bacon: Basics of Network Analysis ####Friday, April 3 Suellen Stringer-Hye

  • Is Kevin Bacon really the best actor to put at the center of the Kevin Bacon game? We'll find out by looking at a mini film dataset loaded into the NoSQL graph database Neo4j and using Cypher, the Neo4j query language, to find actors and movies, discover related actors and directors and once and for all, solve the Bacon Path question.

###Curating Digital Collections with Omeka ####Friday, April 10 Ed Warga

  • In this workshop participants will learn how to build digital exhibits using the Omeka content management system. Omeka can be used for a variety of projects including digital archives, exhibits, and collections; digital humanities projects; course sites; and student projects. This workshop offers:
    • examples of digital collections built on the Omeka platform
    • hands on experience building a digital collection in Omeka
    • ideas for web hosting
