Writing Descriptions - HeardLibrary/exhibitions GitHub Wiki

Item Descriptions

  • Should be 300-500 characters in length
    • including spaces, html tags, punctuation
  • Descriptions should put the item into context with your larger theme, and ideally the overall exhibition theme
    • They should be lively & engaging, too!
  • Keep in mind that items are to be selected for their national significance
  • For help writing clear descriptions, you may find the Hemingway App, useful. It is an automated tool that will check your descriptions for passive text, complex or hard to understand sentence structure, fragments, and opportunities to simplify word choice. It's just a tool and isn't required - so don't worry about it too much.
    • Aim for your description to score 'in the green'

Overall Case Descriptions

  • A single description for each physical exhibit case will also be required. These descriptions will stand in for the entire story being told in the case.
    • Pedestals: 50 words
    • Inset cases: 50-100 words
  • All of the above rules for item descriptions (except for length) also apply to case descriptions.
