Writing Case Labels - HeardLibrary/exhibitions GitHub Wiki

Instructions:

Curators will need to compose draft case labels for each of their cases. They can be created in markdown files under your case topic in the metadata folder of this repository. Each case will need the following:

  1. A title (10 words or less)
  2. An overall description for the case (Pedestals: 50 words. Inset cases: 50-100 words)
  1. Items listed in citation format (see below)
  2. List of items that you want in the interactive. Just an email with the XML filenames will suffice. But for any files with multiple images associated, let me know which of the images you want displayed - otherwise I will assume you want all of them included in the interactive.
  • Keep in mind your interactive allocation limits, which can be found here.

Citation Formatting:

For purposes of brevity in the exhibition cases, we include a very minimal amount of information in the label citations. This allows the description to take precedence, putting the objects into context and hopefully creating meaning rather than bogging down visitors with long references. See The Punctuation Guide for help deciding whether to put your title(s) in italics, quotations, or to leave them formatted in regular type Thanks!

We include: creating agent, title, other agents (i.e. illustrator, publishers), date, work type (if not already named in or given away by the title), and location (repository name, collection name from refid). Keep in mind:

  • Worktype should be entered in the singular (not plural) form
  • For unknown or approximate dates, add the term "circa."
  • Devised titles should be put in square brackets.
  • Please check with Special Collections or consult this list of official names of manuscript collections when entering in collection names

Templates

(These change depending on item type. those listed below are obviously not exhaustive, but use these and the examples below to get you started. email with any questions):

  • Book:
    • Author. Title of book. (City/State of publication: Publisher name. Date of publication). Collection name, Repository

Pedestal: Making Money from Murder

Since the silent era, crime films have been shaped by public opinion toward the law. In 1959’s Compulsion, based on the 1924 Leopold and Loeb trial, unremorseful criminals are saved through the power of the law. In contrast, the 1967 Bonnie and Clyde emphasized the couple’s romance to appeal to audiences interested in social statements rather than punishment.

Pedestal: The Crime of the Century

The trial of Richard Bruno Hauptmann for the 1932 kidnapping of Charles and Anne Lindbergh’s son was covered by journalists around the world. “The Crime of the Century” raised concerns about the growth of organized crime, fueled in large part by sensationalized tabloid accounts and photographs.
