The Problem

Scabies is highly prevalent issue amongst Australian Aboriginal communities. Unfortunately, the problem continues to affect thousands of children and adults due to a lack of screenings and treatment. One Disease is an Australian charity that is looking to help eradicate scabies by empowering community based workers to screen and treat for the issue.

An app currently exists to help assist this process. Unfortunately, it requires clinical knowledge and high literacy and numeracy to use, something not community workers possess. Furthermore, the existing app is restricted to one specific disease and is not able to be updated real-time.

The Solution

To help assist community worker screen and treat for scabies, we are developing an app that provides the following features:

  • An intuitive, image-based interface to help capture and document observations in manner that caters for low-literacy and little clinical knowledge
  • Location based search allowing workers to look up patients based on their address
  • Ability to extend the application to allow it to be used for other diseases
  • Bulk screening to reduce community fatigue and increase efficiency
  • Remote quality control system allowing experts to oversee and audit the screening process

Application/Relevance

Democratising the screening process by making it more accessible and giving community control and ownership of the healthcare process.

Tech stack

The program is currently developed as a prototype so we haven't particularly focused on the implementation details. However, our intention is to implement the app using a HTML-based framework allowing it to be delivered on all major platforms including both iOS and Android phones. At this stage, we do not feel it is necessary to build as a native app as the performance requirements are not particularly demanding and all features can be achieved in HTML.
