Consolidation

Cloaked: So currently when people are looking for Homeworld Remastered modding information, they might check the:

  1. Original Karos Graveyard wiki
  2. Gearbox Forums
  3. Fandom Karos Graveyard wiki
  4. Fandom HW Modding wiki
  5. BitBucket Mod Feature Resource wiki

I've contributed quite a bit to both Fandom site's myself, but eventually searching 5 locations, and dealing with the Fandom platform just kinda sucks. Both of the Fandom sites have certainly been helpful, but unfortunately they are missing most of the content from the original Karos Graveyard. Ideally we would simply have one wiki, that included content from all existing wikis. Start by reconstructing the original Karos Graveyard and then update its content for Homeworld Remastered. Yes it would take effort to combine them, but I decided to put my head down and take action. I started by doing a wiki software selection using the criteria below:

  1. Search bar with strong search capabilities
  2. Top/side/bottom navigation bar visible on all pages
  3. Important wiki features like version control, version history, recently changed pages, page change notifications, page indexes, syntax highlighting, page comments, etc
  4. Simple/easy to use markup language
  5. Ability to edit pages in a web-browser
  6. Ability to clone site and edit pages locally with Git
  7. Free of clutter/ads
  8. Longevity

The original Karos Graveyard website had these features except for #6 and tragically #8. After looking into many options, I landed on GitHub's wiki, which meats all of the criteria above. It doesn't have as many advanced wiki features as say paying to host Wiki.js or DokuWiki, but its great for a free solution.

In May 2020 I fully reconstructed the original Karos Graveyard on GitHub (details). The wiki is now fully functional and dedicated to Homeworld Remastered modding. The content will need to be updated from HW2C to HWRM as needed, but most of the content still applies. Additionally all admins of the other sites are onboard, and their sites have been depreciated to be consolidated into the Homeworld Remastered Karos Graveyard wiki on GitHub.

Fandom Karos Graveyard

  • Link: https://karosgraveyard.fandom.com/
  • Description: Modding wiki for Homeworld Remastered
  • Pages: ~503
  • Contributors: ~6
  • Admins: Corodius, Mikali, Cloaked
  • History: On September 24, 2013 Corodius founded the Fandom Karos Graveyard. The goal was to reconstruct the original Karos Graveyard, for continued community collaboration on Homeworld 2. The site was started from scratch, and manually copied some information from the orginal Karos Graveyard. Limited progress was made by a few contributors. When Homeworld Remastered was released, the site was adopted by Mikali on March 9th, 2015. Mikali re-purposed the site for Homeworld Remastered, and put a lot of effort into the site from 2015 to September 2017. The site grew to over 450 pages, however as of March 2020 its still missing the majority of the information from the original Karos Graveyard.
  • Cons: Missing the majority of the content from the original Karos Graveyard. Many people do not like the Fandom platform, and its cluttered with ads. Can't edit pages locally with Git.

Fandom Homeworld Modding Wiki

  • Link: https://hwmod.fandom.com/
  • Description: Modding wiki for all games in the Homeworld series
  • Pages: ~88
  • Contributors: ~6
  • Admins: Sastrei
  • History: On March 17, 2015 Sastrei founded the Fandom Homeworld Modding Wiki. The site was inspired by the original Karos Graveyard, and aimed to be the home for modding information on all the Homeworld series games. The Homeworld Remastered section was started from scratch, and manually copied some information from the orginal Karos Graveyard and Gearbox Forums. The site grew to over 80 pages, however as of March 2020 its still missing most of the information from the original Karos Graveyard.
  • Cons: Missing most of the content from the original Karos Graveyard. Many people do not like the Fandom platform, and its cluttered with ads. The scope of the site may be too large (for example if a user is searching for HWRM modding info, they may see HW1/C/2/DOK info cluttering the search results). Can't edit pages locally with Git.
